Project Zomboid Build 42 Stable is the biggest update since Build 41, expanding nearly every part of the game instead of focusing on a single feature. Whether you're returning after a break or starting for the first time, Build 42 introduces new ways to survive, build, craft and explore.
If you want to play the Build 42 with friends, using a Project Zomboid dedicated server is worth considering. It supports mods and keeps your world running 24/7, so other players can continue playing even when the server owner is offline.
How to Play the PZ Build 42
If you're already using the normal Steam version of Project Zomboid, Build 42 Stable should download automatically after release.
If you're currently using the Unstable branch:
- Open your Steam Library.
- Right-click Project Zomboid.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Betas tab.
- Change the beta participation to None.
- Allow Steam to download the latest update.
Once the download is complete, you'll be playing Build 42 Stable.
Save Compatibility
One important thing to know is that older save files will not work with Build 42 Stable. This is because the developers changed many core parts of the game, such as how the world is created and how different game systems work. These changes make old saves incompatible with the new version.
The following save files cannot be used in Build 42 Stable:
- Build 41 saves.
- Build 42.19 Unstable saves.
If you want to keep playing one of your old worlds, you don't have to delete it. Instead, you can switch to an older version of the game using Steam's beta branches.
- legacy41 lets you continue playing your Build 41 saves.
- 42.19 lets you continue playing your Build 42.19 Unstable saves.
If you want to play the new Build 42 Stable update, you'll need to start a new game. This is the only way to use all of the new features and changes included in the Stable release.
Dedicated Servers and Multiplayer
If you host a multiplayer server, make sure you've selected the correct game branch and that every player is using the same version. Otherwise, players won't be able to join the server. Server owners should also expect some mods to stop working until their creators release updates. If your server relies heavily on mods, waiting a few days before upgrading may help avoid compatibility issues.
Multiplayer Improvements
The Stable release also includes many multiplayer fixes that were made during the Unstable testing period. These updates improve zombie behavior, character spawning, controller support, vehicle towing and butcher hooks. Together, these changes make multiplayer servers run more smoothly and provide a better experience for players.
New Features in Build 42
Animal Husbandry
Animals are one of the biggest new features in Build 42. Players can now keep farm animals to help them survive for a long time. Instead of only looking for food, growing crops, or fishing, they can also raise animals. Taking care of animals needs planning, but it gives players a steady source of food, especially as surviving becomes more difficult.
Crafting Overhaul
There are more recipes, new ways to make items, and more things you can create, like tools, weapons, furniture, and other useful objects. Instead of waiting to find rare items, players can make more of what they need by themselves. This makes crafting much more important for surviving in the long run.
Building Improvements
Players now have more choices when building and upgrading their bases, making it easier to create larger, stronger, and better looking safehouses. With the improved crafting system, building a good base is now a much more important part of surviving in Build 42 than it was in earlier versions.
New Map Locations
Knox Country has been expanded with new places to explore, along with updates to existing areas. Players can visit new towns and buildings, find more loot and discover new locations. These changes make exploring the world more rewarding and give players more reasons to travel beyond the places they already know.
Lighting and Atmosphere
Build 42 adds a new lighting system that makes the game look more realistic. Buildings are darker inside, weather affects how well you can see and the lighting changes more smoothly as time passes. These improvements make exploring empty buildings and travelling at night feel more realistic and immersive.
Better Survival Gameplay
Many of the new features work together to make survival more interesting. With better crafting, farm animals, improved building and a bigger world to explore, players have more things to do after the early game. Instead of just trying to survive each day, Build 42 encourages players to build strong bases that can support them for a long time.
